RANIERI: "Shame to concede late like that"

Read what boss Claudio Ranieri had to say in the wake of Sunday's 1-1 draw with Genoa.

The Giallorossi took the lead late on through Stephan El Shaarawy, but were pegged back in the dying moments as Cristian Romero scored from a header - and could even have lost the game in injury time, only for Antonio Mirante to save Toni Sanabria's penalty.

"They did very well to keep plugging away," Ranieri said afterwards.

"We knew this would be a very tough match and it proved to be. It's a shame we got caught out on that corner kick, because otherwise we'd have bagged all three points."

How can a team of tall players like Roma get caught out on a corner kick by a shorter player like Cristian Romero?
"That's the fourth time he's done something like that, if I'm not mistaken. We were trying to shield him. [Patrik] Schick was there but he managed to get free. It's a shame because we needed the three points but we won't give up."

Maybe you need a bit more focus in some situations?
"We knew we'd be going up against a deep-lying defence and a team that would try to hit us on the counter attack and make the most of set pieces. Unfortunately for us, they managed that. It's a good job for us that Antonio Mirante saved the penalty right at the end."

How big of a blow would it be not to qualify for the Champions League?
"We've managed to get back on the right path, having been in a difficult situation. We're in the running for it and we'll fight until the very end. The teams that get the most points will qualify for the Champions League, let's hope we're one of them."
