Di Francesco: Real Madrid game about getting players in form

Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco declared himself satisfied with the team's preparations during pre-season, as his side prepare to bring their US Tour to a close on Tuesday night against Real Madrid.

The Giallorossi face the reigning Champions League holders at New York's MetLife Stadium on Tuesday, in their third and final game of the 2018 International Champions Cup.

And, with a win over Barcelona and plenty of hard work in training under their belts, Di Francesco expressed his happiness with preparations so far - as the new Serie A campaign looms into view.

"It has been a positive tour, in terms of the games played and the facilities and the training we have done," Di Francesco said. "We were able to get the work we wanted done, despite the travelling involved.

"Tomorrow I will make a similar selection choice to the other games. I want all my players to reach the same level of sharpness and, of course, will pick them depending on their individual characteristics - their form, their current fitness, their level of preparation. So don't necessarily expect the so-called ‘first-choice' line-up tomorrow."

He added: "For me it is a good chance to assess and evaluate the improvement of the new players, and to see how they have adapted and assimilated within the squad. So this is one of the main things I will be looking for from the game."

With less than two weeks until the transfer window closes in Italy, the coach was asked whether fans could expect any more incomings or outgoings - and whether he thought Roma's business compared favourably with that done by their rivals.

"The sporting director has spoken a lot about it," Di Francesco noted. "The transfer market is still open, both going in and out, and we can start making assessments about it when it is closed.

"It is too early to saying anything [about who made good signings or not], but clearly Roma have already signed a good number of new players that will improve the squad."

With 10 players already brought into the squad this summer, Di Francesco stressed that one of his key tasks is to try and get all the new faces up to speed as quickly as possible.

The coach is hoping to call upon his whole squad, in order to make a big push in every competition this season.

"Well, for someone like Ivan Marcano it is important that he plays consistently and that he learns our defensive mechanisms and our approach," Di Francesco said. "His most important task is to learn all that.

"But, first and foremost, I want to reiterate that next season is not just about Serie A - we have other extremely important competitions and our whole squad will have big roles to play. Marcano is one of those, and of course I am very pleased that he seems to have settled in quickly.

"Could Justin Kluivert also start on the first day of the season? Well, it will depend on things: we will make assessments but he is in a good shape and so of course it is a possibility. But it is not just a possibility for him, but for a lot of players.

"Nevertheless, clearly we bought him because we believe he has talent to be a starter, and to be a key man for us. But obviously he will need time to settle in, to adjust."
