Di Francesco "Underlines importance of Coppa Italia to squad"

oach Eusebio Di Francesco knows Monday's opponents Virtus Entella cannot be underestimated, as Roma begin their Coppa Italia campaign at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Giallorossi go into the competition looking to make a deep run - especially after going out in their first match last season, in what was Di Francesco's first season in charge in the capital.

The boss will be without a couple of key players for the last-16 tie, but has been encouraged by the hard work the squad have put in since returning from the international break.

Here is what he had to say to Roma TV on Sunday, in lieu of his usual pre-match press conference...

How is the squad returned after the winter break?

"They came back full of desire. They have trained really well, I am happy with their focus over the past few days."

Are there any players that need to be assessed before tomorrow's game?

"Kostas Manolas and Stephan El Shaarawy won't be in the squad. Alessandro Florenzi is one of a couple of players that we still need to assess. I have to consider whether to start with Edin Dzeko or Patrik Schick - at the moment they both have a 50% chance."

The team will face Virtus Entella, the surprise package of the Coppa Italia this season.

"Well, there was Novara too. Entella are playing in Serie C but I think they have the quality to do well even in Serie B. They have a very experienced coach and will take a boost from the occasion. We absolutely cannot underestimate them."

How do you prepare the squad to avoid underestimating the opponent?

"We have been training with real intensity, because this is an important competition for us. The Coppa Italia is always a key objective - and last year we fell short for a number of reasons. We need to create that attitude of doing as best we can in every competition."

Tomorrow, despite the cold and the fact it is a Monday, there should be over 15,000 fans...

"The fans are always important, we need to give them something to cheer about with our performances and our way of playing."

And finally, what are your expectations for 2019?

"To continue to improve - in both performances and results, because we have come up a bit short in both areas in the first half of the season."
