Former Roma goalkeeper Doni has backed the club's current No. 1, Alisson Becker, to demonstrate his class over the coming campaign.

Doni, who represented the Giallorossi between 2005 and 2011, played 10 times for Brazil - winning the Copa America in 2007 and going to the World Cup with the squad in 2010.

Now both Brazil and Roma's No. 1 shirts belong to Alisson, and their former holder believes the 24-year-old is ready to make a big name for himself.

Alisson grabbed headlines on Tuesday after a match-saving display against Atletico Madrid on his Champions League debut.

"I'm not surprised [by his performance]," Doni told Corriere dello Sport. "From the first day, I thought with regular playing time he would show his quality.

"Alisson is a great goalkeeper. You do not become No. 1 for the Brazilian national team through luck, things aren't how they used to be. After Taffarel we began to create an important school of goalkeepers: Dida, Julio Cesar, myself. Now it's his turn."

Doni believes Alisson's arrival in the Italian capital, and emergence as the starter after a debut campaign playing in the cup competitions, is a perfect arrangement for all involved.

"I am glad that Roma have got him," he added. "Indeed, I think it was a bargain. And for his part, he is in the right place to get better. Experience in Europe, and in European competition, is a huge thing for a South American goalkeeper - as long as they get regular opportunities to play."
